Mime & Physical Theatre

List 3

Butterfly Man   "Robert's "Butterfly Man" character is a classic mad jester whose outrageous comedy soars wild and untamed, but ultimately is harmless as a butterfly. Well-armed with an acerbic wit, he delivers quips that are fast, furious and eminently quotable. Butterfly Man endears the audience with rude charm and shamelessly toys with his volunteers...and they love every minute of it."

Horla "Horla was formed in early 1999 as a production company concentrating on telling stories through performances with a physical edge and promoting new talent from design to writing and music."

National Theatre of the Deaf "Through its thirty-four year history, The National Theatre of the Deaf stands as testimony to the artistry and capability of its Actors. There have been 64 national tours, performances in all 50 states, all the continents, 31 international tours and over 8,000 performances earning NTD its place in theatrical history as the oldest continually-producing touring theatre company in the United States."

Pink Ink  Although not a mime company as is Butterfly Man listed above, I have included both of these because I like them.  This is a very cool company that I saw performing at the Halifax Busker's Festival when I was there.

Pontine Movement Theatre  "Pontine Movement Theatre has been a ground-breaking force in the blossoming of actor-based theatre, creating work that is engaging, innovative and original. Pontine's work is founded on the concept that the actor should function as a creative (rather than interpretive) artist, and that the name actor dictates action (movement) as their primary tool."

The Theater Gallery  "The Theater Gallery presents original innovative movement theater with an interdisciplinary ensemble. We share with our audience a highly imaginative production that tells an entertaining story about universal human needs. Each production is a collage of physical performance by dancers & movement actors, original texts incorporating poetry, stage imagery & live special effects created by visual artists, and music performed by live musicians, and/or recorded provocative sound-scapes."

Naomi Tyrrell "Internationally, Naomi has appeared on stages in Hong Kong, Yugoslavia, Expo '86 and Expo '90 in Osaka, Japan as well as various folk festivals throughout North America.  Naomi's television experiences include the CBC mime/mask drama The Garden and the Cage, and several guest appearances on children's programs.  After establishing her own School for Studies in Mime, Mask and Clown, Naomi began teaching, performing and writing, developing her unique style of educational entertainment."

Mimo Magic Interesting page and group I found while surfing the Yahoo/France sites.

World of Mime Theatre - A good resource page.

Indian Mime Theatre - "The eminent pantomime artist of India Mr. Niranjan Goswami founded Indian Mime Theatre. IMT has since done lot of experimentation with this art form. The new form emerged was based on Natyashastra and hence is absolutely Indian. The training method that is developed by Mr. Goswami is also different. The movement, gesture or posture of Indian Mukabhinaya is more intricate and subtle. IMT has been producing both theme and story based short items and full-fledged mime-plays since its inception in 1976. "

Wroclawski Teatr Pantomimy - This is a very interesting company and site from Poland.  It is in Polish.

  - A very interesting Company that has a great history of innovative mask performance.

Barto and Miss Take - These are two wonderful performers that I have seen perform several times.  We have performed at the same festivals, Juste Pour Rire, Halifax International Street Performers Festival and, Charlottetown Festival of Lights.  They are included in both the clown and physical theatre sections.

Theatre de l'Ange Fou - "Theatre de l'Ange Fou has created over 17 originals plays, devised pieces, as well as adaptations, ranging from duets to ensemble work: ...revealing different aspects of the spiritual and political human quest, portraying the frailty and complexity of relationships between individuals longing for love. Affections of the mind , and the absurdity of life are a constant source of inspiration for both the director and the actors in composing the plays."

NAKUPELLE -...street theater is visual, skillful and lyrical. Add the clown's red nose and it suddenly becomes subversive, sub-lunatic, sublime. NAKUPELLE street theater has been acclaimed for creating worlds where even the most serious audience loosens up, laughing like children or staring in wonder."

Frantic Assembly - "We are not an outwardly political company. Hymns is our only remotely political show. Our aim is to make intelligent, thought provoking theatre that is most importantly accessible and ENTERTAINING"

Push Physical Theatre Company - "In performance, PUSH Physical Theatre cannot be quantified using current paradigms. They choose instead to move outside of their codified training to create a blended style which at once broadens the perspective of theatre whilst being the very essence of it."

Rachel Rosenthal - "Artistic Director and performer with The Rachel Rosenthal Company, is an interdisciplinary performer who has developed a revolutionary performance technique that integrates text, movement, voice, choreography, improvisation, inventive costuming, dramatic lighting and wildly imaginative sets into an unforgettable theater experience."

Derevo - I first saw Derevo in London, England performing at the International Mime Festival.  The production was called "Once" which was a wonderful, magnificent show.  I found their web site which, like the company, is interesting and worth the visit.

Bodiescape - "...is a Theatre and Performance Research Web Base dedicated to the research on physicality, the body of the performer and movement on stage. The scope of this project is not at all limited to dance, but encompasses all forms of theatrical presentations: mime, physical theatre, the body in dramatic theatre, physicality in Non-western traditions etc. An important issue is the discussion of a viable method of describing and analyzing all these different body-signs."

Bash Street Theatre - "Bash Street Theatre Company has an International reputation for inventive and fast-moving comic-strip shows featuring a fusion of live music, physical theatre and circus skills. Street shows, walkabouts and large scale productions are toured to indoor/outdoor venues and festivals throughout UK, Europe and beyond."

Theatrical Mime Theatre  - "Theatrical Mime Theatre, Rick Wamer & Lorie Heald, Creative Partners, is dedicated to the development, documentation and performance of new works of international contemporary theatrical mime theatre created through collaborative creative processes.  This development, documentation and performance of new works serves to preserve, educate to and expose all forms of international contemporary theatrical mime theatre and the techniques of its practitioners for the benefit of the general public and the practicing artists in the field."

Gateway Performance Productions - "...creates and produces performing arts productions for touring to theatres, festivals, museums, libraries, colleges, universities, schools and other community sites. The company specializes in mask theatre and mime and offers cultural arts programs such as The Aztec Dances of Mexico, The Gateway (Irish) Mummers and The Flamenco Dance of Spain as well as related workshops, classes, residencies and exhibits."
