APPLYING THE PAPER

Layering (Glue and Paper)

Take the paper and tear it up into strips as you did with the tissue paper.  Do not cut it with scissors for straight edges.  The tears allow the paper to mesh together better for a stronger mask.  Make sure you have different sizes and lengths.  Small strips for bumpy or fine features, larger pieces for larger, smoother surface areas.  Pour some glue into a shallow container.  It is good to pour it as you need it as this can be a lengthy process and it's good to keep the glue fresh and not let it start to dry up or thicken.  Lepage's white glue is relatively cheap and can be thinned with a little water.  You can also use flour and water or any other type of thin, slow drying, and most important NON-TOXIC glue.

Now make yourself comfortable, especially your back, because you are going to be there for awhile.  One at a time dip a piece of paper into the glue and apply it to the surface.  Work in an orderly fashion.  The first two layers can be frustrating as the previous layer of glue or tissue may stick to your fingers and lift off.  Work patiently and don't be afraid to use lots of glue to make the surface slick and easy to smooth out.  Make sure that the first layer covers every thing evenly around the edges and special features.  You can work around the eyes from the start or you can cut them out after the mask dries.  The third and subsequent layers become easier and quicker to apply.  Once you start though make sure you keep going until you have finished all the layers you need.  Once in awhile make sure you stand up and walk around and stretch your back and legs.  There is no sense ending up stiff, frustrated and hating the mask.  The number of layers you use to make a strong mask depends on the type of paper you use.

Newspaper -  Nine or ten layers

Construction Paper - Six or seven layers

Japanese Paper - Five or six layers

When you have finished all the layers and are wondering whether the last hour or two (or more) was worth it, leave the mask to dry over night.  Stop thinking about it and go hug your kids, or your lover, your dog or whoever is within reach.  Now move on to page four and perhaps fantasize about who you'd really like to hug while you wait for the page to load.
